Biography

Joanna Carter was born in Miami, Florida. She received her Bachelor's in Fine Arts in Drawing from the University of Central Florida. She focused on creating expressive realism portraiture in traditional mediums of graphite, charcoal and print. At Florida International University where she received her Masters in Fine Art, she grew her expressions to include abstraction, pushing her dark textured lines into new directions and dimensions, involving animation, video and installation. She was also awarded the competitive scholarship from the Women in the Visual Arts/ Lynn Travis Stender during her time at FIU. Her work has been exhibited in shows across the east coast including the cities of Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Atlanta, and New York City. In recent years, she practices portraiture in acrylics, working in a color palette linked to her Jamaican and South Floridian heritage.  In her works on paper, mixed media, video and installation, she is interested in giving the viewer a revelation of the intimate artist's hand through the process of mark making and documentation.
